Five Random Facts for Wednesday

Here are some random facts for you.

1.  The letter “ù” in French (with the grave accent) is used for only ONE word:  “où,” which means “where.”  It’s only used to distinguish from “ou” (without the accent), which is pronounced the same, but means “or.”

Despite just having one purpose, the letter “ù” has its own key on French and Canadian keyboards.  (To be fair, it IS a rather common word.)

2.  Dogs are banned on Antarctica.  It’s because of a fear they could spread diseases to the native seals there.

3.  The first thing anyone bought online in a secure retail transaction was Sting’s CD “Ten Summoner’s Tales” in 1994.  A guy from Philadelphia bought it from a company called Net Market in New Hampshire.

4.  Walt Disney did the original voice of Mickey Mouse.  He stopped after 17 years when he got too busy and had to turn it over to someone else.

5.  There’s a word in Japanese for a person who buys more books than they could ever possibly read.  It’s “tsundoku.”
