A Cruise Ship Tilted on Its Side While the “Titanic” Song Was Playing

This was in the news last week, but now there’s one extra-fun detail.  A Royal Caribbean cruise ship called Explorer of the Seas docked in Miami on Sunday after leaving Spain November 2nd.  It was supposed to arrive last Thursday, but there was an incident.

Five days in, it got hit by a huge gust of wind near the Canary Islands off Africa that left the ship TILTED to one side with thousands of people on board.  One passenger said it felt like a 45-degree angle and lasted three minutes.

The captain said it was more like 14 degrees, but that’s still a lot for a big ship.  Tables and chairs were sliding, and there was broken glass everywhere.

There’s a video where a big screen display slides across the floor and hits a guy, then crashes into a table.  You can also see people struggling to walk.  (Here’s that video, plus one of a guy sitting at a bar when it happened.)

But here’s why it’s in the news again:  A guy who was on board talked to a reporter while disembarking in Miami, and revealed that the song “My Heart Will Go On” from “TITANIC” was playing when it happened.

You can’t hear it in any of the footage we’ve seen, because it wasn’t playing everywhere.  There was some sort of performance going on in the main theater, and the song was part of it.

He said because of the song, people thought the tilting was part of the show.  They figured it was a cool special effect, until they realized it definitely WASN’T.

Thankfully, the ship was fine and righted itself.  But it had to return to port after one person was injured and needed medical attention.  That’s why it got to Miami three days late.
