Okay, Mystery Lovers: What Are These Mysterious White Blobs That Are Washing Up on Beaches?

There are a LOT of true crime fans out there, and people who like horror and mysteries.  A recent poll of people who like that stuff found that 61% of them believe THEY have what it takes to crack a real-life case.

Well, all hands on deck here:  Up in Canada, “unidentified white blobs” have been washing ashore on the beaches in Newfoundland.  It’s been happening for at least a month now, and the environmental authorities don’t know what it is.  Which is pretty odd.

The white masses range in size from a small coin up to a dinner plate . . . and it didn’t take long for the locals to notice them.  And get concerned.

One local describes them as “doughy, like half-made bread” . . . with a “very strong smell of vegetable oil.”  It’s unclear if anyone has TASTED it.  (???)

But it wasn’t just some kid flushing their Play-Doh, and it somehow making it all the way to the ocean.

There’s a “significant” amount of this stuff, showing up on around 50 miles of coastline.  So if it’s something that was dumped, it was a commercial industry, not just one family.

Researchers have collected samples, and one local was told they were being analyzed in the lab, but this was weeks ago, and they still haven’t heard back.  One preliminary test suggested it could be plant-based.

It’s unclear if it’s STILL washing up, or if it’s just being left on the beaches.  It’s sounds like it’s still coming, but it’s also unclear what people should do with it, since no one knows what it is.

One person said it doesn’t seem like it will degrade on its own, only that it’ll pick up sand and other material will stick to it, and it’ll just get buried.  And another joked, “Fry it up, put some molasses on it, let us know how it was.”

(Here’s an amusing video of a local showing the stuff off, and there’s people speculating in this Facebook thread.)
